Startravelling with TheRitz

Een tijd geleden heb  ik een nieuwe shorty refractor gekocht. Er kwam op te-les-koop.nl een Vixen Shuttle Scope 80S voorbij en na 5 minuten Googlen was ik erachter dat deze kijker bekend stond als een behoorlijk goede achromatische refractor. Veel kon ik er niet over vinden maar de koop was al snel gemaakt.

Nu, een paar weken later, is de Shuttle Scope mijn meest gebruikte kijker. En volgens het gezegde De beste kijker is die je het meest gebruikt is het nu mijn beste kijker. Bijna elke heldere avond komt het kijkertje even buiten en realistische doelen vanuit mijn SQM 19.0 á 19.7 tuin zijn dan bolhopen, planeten, de maan, dubbelsterren en open clusters met her en der een helder Messiertje.

Maar wat is dan bekend van deze kijker. Niet veel! Ik heb eens wat rondgeneusd en heb wat zaken opgezocht en zal die hier aggregeren. Ik doe dit in het engels omdat een search dan ook mijn site teruggeeft en dat scheelt potentiële lezers veel heen en weer geklik.

A while back I bought a Vixen Shuttle Scope 80S. There is not much known about this fine little scope. So, in an attempt to make life easier for those interested in this scope, here’s the info I could find.

The scope is for sale under brandnames Vixen and Perl. The latter I see popping up in French speaking areas.  There’s a 800/480 F6 Shuttle Scope 80S (1.9kg) and a 100mm F6.8 Shuttle Scope (2kg). They are made in Japan and were manufactured between 1995 and 2003.  You will also see these scopes als 80SS and 100SS respectively. They sold it together with a soft carrying bag.

The design is a Frauenhofer achromat with a retractable focusser for crude focusing, topped with a helical fine focusser. Mine has a Baader diagonal and Baader helical focusser which I am sure were added by one of the previous owners.

For a shorty achromat, the chromatic abberation control is pretty good. Some say the CA control is up to par with the early ED telescopes. A violet (“color fringe”) filter is something you however would like.  This scope is well known in Asia for its build quality, price and the CA control I just mentioned. Price in 2002 was $154.

There’s some pictures to be found of this nice scope. I’ve some of my own SS80 (in this article you can find some more and some info which you’ll have to translate first). Also, here you can find a video made with a Shuttle Scope and here is a picture of the sun made with a simple solar filter.

You can easily mount this scope on a tripod.

Dat is dus alles wat ik kon vinden. Leuke info. Maar belangrijker is dat dit gewoon een prettig kijkertje is!

Deze avond ben ik met Andries (v0orz. sterrenwacht Amersfoort) bij de sterrenwacht wezen kijken met de 25cm dobson. M27 met en zonder UHC-E, M57 idem, Andromeda in de lichtsoep van Praxis Amersfoort (bah!)… harstikke leuk, gewoon ff een paar dingetjes kijken. Laatst met de verrekijker was dat ook al zo lekker laagdrempelig.
En dan ga je denken hè… die hele astrofotografie is een heerlijke technische uitdaging. Het maakt de nerd in mij los.

Maar het is zo hoogdrempelig. Even snel een fotootje maken doe je niet. Eerst opstellen, polar alignment goed doen.. ben je 30 minuten verder. Dan de goto instellen, proefdraaien met de camera… installeren achter de laptop en het is een uur later eer de eerste plaatjes binnenrollen. En dan kun je koffiedrinken. Of ik pak de dobson en ga daar weer lekker mee ‘surfen’.

Soms denk ik: ik verkoop die hele technische zut en regel een 35cm reisdobson. En dan gewoon lekker kijken. Veel laagdrempeliger, kan even snel tussendoor etc.

Tja…. ben benieuwd wat ik volgende week denk ^_^

NCG7510 bedoel ik. Elke keer op weg of vertrekkend van M52 in Cas zie ik dit clustertje. Nou ben ik niet zo van de clustertjes, maar als ik dan moet kiezen is dit wel één van de favoriete open clusters. Heb er weinig info over gevonden, dus er is schijnbaar maar weinig liefde voor deze NGC.

Een foto door de sonde Cassini genomen van de ringen van Saturnus met anderhalf miljard kilometer verderop de aarde. Zo. Weten we ook weer waar we staan, letterlijk & figuurlijk! Zou trouwens best eens een stageplek kunnen zijn voor mensen die last hebben van overmatige vormen van hoogmoed, arrogantie & wangedrag naar andere mensen toe!

Aade gezien vanaf Saturnus

Nou. Dat je niet ziet wat je op deze allsky foto van de sterrenhemel in Kollase, Duitsland, ziet! Dit is hoe een sterrenhemel eruit ziet als er amper lichtvervuiling hebt. Je moet er vanuit Nederland al gauw 800km voor rijden richting de voormalige DDR, de Morvan of zuidelijke Alpen in Frankrijk of La Palma in de oceaan.
Deze foto geeft redelijk weer hoe de sterrenhemel er daar in Kollase daadwerkelijk uitziet, hij is niet extra lang belicht.

De laatste tijd begint het aanbod van astronomie gerelateerde applicaties in de Android Market mooie vormen aan te nemen. Daar waar een jaar geleden vooral Google Sky Map aanwezig was, kun je nu een flink aantal leuke applicaties vinden die je hobby opleuken of zelfs echt functioneel iets toevoegen. Galaxy Zoo

Vandaag had ik wat tijd om te testen met het aansturen van de telescoop montering via een PC en het aansturen van dat en meer (webcam, 350D) via een unpowered USB hub met 5mtr lange USB kabel met repeater. Ik merk liever nu dat het werkt. Of niet.

Aansturen van de montering met Stellarium was een eitje. Dat lijkt te werken maar moet zich nog in ‘het veld’  bewijzen. Afgezien daarvan vraag ik me af wat de meerwaarde is tov de 30.000 objecten in de Autosta #494 van Meade. Daarin zitten al de Messiers, ICs, NGCs en Caldwell’s. Via Carte du Ciel kreeg ik het niet aan de praat. Nog niet.

WxAstrocapture lijkt wat issues te hebben met connecten naar de Vesta Pro webcam zonder voeding op de USB hub. Mogelijk moet ik dus nog een 12v connectie naar de powertank leggen.

Afsluitend heb ik de USB hub op de montering geplaatst en de draad via tie raps vastgemaakt. Met klevend klitteband, fabelhafte uitvinding! Voortaan is het een kwestie van inpluggen in de verlengkabel en apparatuur in de hub en ik ben good to go.
